Default Outer Cam bearing shot

My Nephew bought a 2005 flhtcui with 36k.the motor sounded good and it ran well, until he got crank sensor light ,Replaced the sensor but noises coming fom bottom end were bad. The cam tensioners were ok but the bearins were gone and took the oil pump and other stuff.
Thought they had cured the cam bearing issue.
Any Ideas what may have caused this? He only rode it about 500 miles. We had ridden together once (I have 06 flhtcui) and it sounded good..

The '99-early '00 bikes also had a weak outer rear cam bearing...I have one of those bikes and got the "bad bearing" letter 6 months after I bought the bike...Yeah, I know the OP is talking about a '05, though.

I'm that nephew the OP is talking about, it is the inner bearing I believe, it is the forward bearing on the case. Came damn close to taking the case out as well.

To add to the question, does anyone think this would be an issue that harley would pay for ? even out of warranty? The rollers came out and destroyed the oil pump and the cam is toast itself. Don't know how bad the crankcase is till they split it. We are looking at doing a 95 ci upgrade. Any recommendations on what parts would be good? Any brands better than others? BTW have V&H Ovals with the fuelpak. The bike is an 05 UC with about 37k miles on it.

Any and all replies welcome!

Just finished a 06 S/G for a friend, inner bearing failed and trashed the whole engine. Busted off the piston oilers metal debris and chunks through whole engine and oil pan. What a mess. Mike
