Default 88 Twin oil change issue

So I went to change the oil in my 88 today and no issues with the transmission, but when it came to the engine what a hassle! Warmed up the engine for a min or two to get the oil warm and thought it was draining fine.... not so much. I capped it and filled it up and before I got a quart and a half in it was full to the brim. Cranked but not fired the engine to move the new oil around and endstate got a quart and a half in. My dip stick was reading over but no oil would drain out the bottom (issues right). Ran the engine to warm it up for a couple mins and road it up and down the street finally after a bit of draining got it down to a normal level. I dont remember having issues prior to this and not the first time i have changed oil.......... What did i do wrong? And I am 100% sure i was draining and filling the right fluids. HELP?

Did you pull the drain plug on the frame? It sound like you might have pulled the wrong plug.

Yeah it was the right plug, i was getting oil out of it at first. On the bottom of the crank case there is a allen bolt that i removed, after adding and draing the oil was coming out a bit clearer from the new stuff i added.

Are you sure you didn't drain the transmission?

I would agree, but if you say you pulled the right one, then.. well thats just weird.

We get phone calls all the time from people saying the same thing. They drain the oil but it only fills up with a quart or so. Swearing they pulled the correct drain plug, they bring the bike to the shop and show us what they did, and they had drained the transmission oil, not the engine oil. They thought the primary case is where the transmission oil is.

Just sayin.

You pulled the plug on the bottom of the engine. Oil will come out, from what I understand. You should of pulled the one on the side of the frame, it drains the oil tank. That is why you were able to fill the oil tank so fast, it was still full of oil. Therefore, pull the correct plug on the side of the frame, unless they are different from an 06.

Yeah, did you pull the oil drain plug from the oil pan, or the bottom of the case?

I guess maybe..... For the 88 on a 05 dyna super, the main is more center towards the front of the bike and tranny is right mid below the brake correct?
