Default Baffle Wrap Questions...Opinions

I just had a 1550 BB kit with PCIII installed on my '04 Heritage. I have samson true dual head pipes and just installed rush mufflers with 1.75" baffles. I plan to get it dyno tuned once I get the exhaust figured out. The 1.75" baffles still are a little loud for my taste. I'm concerned that if I go to the 1.5" baffles the tone of the exhaust will suffer. I've read MANY post about baffles.

My questions are about re-wrapping the 1.75" baffles. How much sound difference would there be using the stove gasket material to wrap the baffles? I read a post about some hi-temp pipe wrap offered by McMaster-Carr (part #9379K93) that says it absorbs sound. Has anyone used this and how did it affect the exhaust sound? Thanks

Not familiar with that wrap but have use a ceramic material the comes in rolls to repack exhaust pipe baffles after the factory stuff burns up. Never needs to be replaced and it does affect the sound but not much. No real change in decibel level but less of a hollow sound, the exhaust pulses are not diffused by the wrap. Hard to describe but I think an improvement.

Thanks for the replies. What I hope to do is deepen the sound to a lower pitch and knock down the decibels just a little. I received a private message that the 1.5" baffle would be higher pitched so I doubt that's an option.

i would try the 2" baffles if i were you they have a much deeper note than the 1.75". volume wise they are abou the same, but the deeper note is more pleasing to the ears in my opinion.

I've used stove gasket material. Just wrap loosely. All braided so not going anywhere. As said the idea is to get a deeper sound from, as said, a hollow sound. Kickes the sound around I figure.
I like it wrapped better that unwrapped.

Thanks. Two good suggestions. I may keep my eyes open for a used set of 2" baffles. I've only put a few miles on the new mufflers so I'll get some riding in and see how it goes. I'm sure I'm not use to the louder exhaust after having stock mufflers. May try the stove gasket stuff at some point. There's a wood stove store nearby. also curious if anyone has used the pipe wrap from McMaster-Carr that another poster recommended. Also read about this stuff called Silent Sport packing that is used in off-road bike mufflers.

Thanks for the link. I have 3" mufflers so it doesn't look like they will work. Not ready to drill/modify my new dual headers just yet.

Default baffle wrap

I purchased a set of Rinehart 4" slip ons and did not like the harmonics of the exhaust. The sound is hard to discribe but it wasn't like the 3.5" mufflers. Any way I ordered some wrap from JP cycles made by Vance and Hines and installed it a few days ago. It got the exhaust note to a deeper sound and now does not have that annoying exhaust note it had. I still haven't put enough miles on yet to see if it will last. Took stainless steel wire and and wrapped it in a sprial twist to hold the wrap in place otherwise it was trying to blow clean out the pipe. This muffler business is to damn expensive to just keep trying out different pipes. Hope this helps
