Default Oil leak, 1992 Softail

I haven't started my bike in a few months, so after charging the battery I started it. It was running for only 30-45 seconds when oil started coming out a breather filter on the right side of the engine, down low. The choke was still closed. It had never done this before. Can you help me out with any ideas of what is wrong?

Thanks a bunch, I appreciate any help for a newbie here.

If you have an EVO motor this is pretty common for long periods with no start. The check ball in the oil pump sticks and causes the puking of oil out the breather vent. Ususally it quits puking after a couple of start ups. Check ball will have to be unstuck if it does'nt.

What you describe is called wet sumping. It happens with sporties and softails because the oil tank is higher than the engine which causes the oil to gravity feed into the engine. It will usually happen like you said after a period of non use and is rather normal. Just check the oil level before you take it out for a ride.

Could you elaborate a little futher on the gravity drainage?

it is when the oil in your oil bag ends up settling in the engine..........so if you check your oil after the bike sat for a month or two and it looks low or empty do not fill it up....because chances are there is plenty of oil it is just sitting in the engine and i guarantee after about a minute of running it will blow the cap off your oil bag.........and cover your bike! my buddy did it this year what a pisser.........
