Default Cam Swap Help....Please

Ok, here's the deal. Got my Wood cams and started disassembly for the install of the cams. I got to the point of removing the cam cover. I pulleed the cam cover and the pic attached is what I see. I am concerned because the timing dots are not lining up the way they should. I have put the front cylinder at TDC numerous times and this is the position of the dots and best I can tell it is at TDC. I can rotate the rear wheel to get everything to line up, but it appears it is not at TDC when I do that. I am on the compression stroke on front cylinder at TDC when the pic is taken. Do I rotate the wheel bakc a little to get the dots to line up and continue disassembling or what? Any help would be appreciated.

you don't have to have them lined up when removing them.

Lining up the dots has no bearing on whether you are at TDC or not. It's just a reference to make sure that the cam timing is correct when you reassemble everything.

Thanks guys......I have been going by the Service Manual and a Cam Write Up Post in this forum. The cam write up post is excellent documentation and a lot of help, but magically the dots were lined up when his cover came off. I didn't think it mattered cause in reassembly everything gets lined up, but though I would check.

Thanks again

If I remember correctly, the dots will be lined up when the rear cyl is on compression TDC. They don't line up for the front.

Ii think it's supposed to be the other way around. I think they are supposed to line up when front cylinder is TDC. They will line up when rear is TDC, but the cam gear dot should be on the far side of the gear. Furthest away from the crank gear dot and alignment mark.

also remember joe that your cam turns half the turns as your crankshaft does, just like a cam in a car motor. so you may find that if you turn your motor over another revolution it may line up the dots. just a thought if you've not tried it. i know this only cause i've fought with many mopars and chevies trying to get everything lined up correctly. by the way, thoose fat bobs are mighty cool looking bikes. good luck with your cam swap.
