5,000 mile service
Hi All,
I called my local H-D today to schedule a oil change. He asked how many miles I had on the bike and I told him 4500 he said I would want to get the 5,000 mile service done in addition to an oil change. I asked what all they did at the 5,000 mile service in addition to the oil change. I couldn't get a straight answer. He did manage to tell me with the 5,000 mile service if I wanted synthetic H-D oil, which I use it would be $275. So what all is involved in the 5,000 mile service, anyone know?

RE: 5,000 mile service
I wish that I could help you out on the 5000 mile checkup, but I haven't had my new Harley long enough to put that many miles on it. Is there a possibility that it would tell you in your owners manual what to expect for a service on a bike with that many miles? Hope that this helps a little.

I know I am new here but Service Manual 50.00, Motorcycle jack at Sears 89.95, special tools none.
If you are the least bit mechanically inclined. There is no way I would pay a dealer 275.00 to pull three plugs, three caps and install 50.00 (high estimate) worth of fluids.
I believe at 5K all they do is the engine oil, maybe (not sure) the filter, check belt tension and look for loose bolts. Good god what do they charge for he 10K service?

I agree with the previous post, get a service manual for your bike. It gives a detailed description of service requirements and the mileage intervals plus a step by step description of how to perform them. Check out the oil forum. There are better oils available than HD Syn3. Start wrenching you bike, you'll be glad you did.

RE: 5,000 mile service
Thanks Guys,
I had bought a service manual and read the index and some sections. I went back and found the maint. table and there it was. When all else fails, READ THE BOOK, DUH.
$275 seems kinda high but I guess I'll keep the appointment. I used to do all my maint. on all my bikes but anymore my time seems to be more valuable. Besides I'd rather ride than wrench.
