Default S&S 106 BB kit

Would it be a waste of time or worth it to install the 106 without doing head work. I have an opportunity to get a kit really cheap and do the labor myself. Between the displacement gains and the associated jump in compression I was thinking that it would give me a nice boost in power for very little money, but if I do the heads the cost will go substantially up.

What say you?

head work is where it's at IMHO. Everything takes place in the heads. I got good power out of my 88" with good head work. Flow is the key. You have to get the the fuel and air in then get it back out. That all takes place in the heads. JMO

Yeah, I know that I will gain a lot with heads but the cost of them is out of reach while the cost of the BB alone isn't
I'm wondering if the 106 alone will give me a big bump in TQ/HP.
S&S claims that using stock heads with the 106BB kit will boost compression to 10:1 so wouldn't that alone boost performance substantially?

If you have the heads off... it is a shame not to do them. BigBoyz heads are like $400 a set.

the power is in the complete package . the heads are one of the main ingredients to it. also the tune.
i am assuming that you have a 96 ci now why not just put a set of heads on it and a cam get it tuned and run it from there??
or put a T-Man 525 cam in it and get it tuned properly then save for heads later .

If I were you I would buy the kit and wait until I could afford to do the heads and install all together. You're gonna have the top end apart to do the BB anyway.

You NEED to think about what these guys are telling you.

Your bike is a SYSTEM. There are going to be a few things addressed all at once no matter what you do.

You simply can NOT install the BB kit(of which I have) and NOT do a tune. So... a TTS is like $400. The tune itself (professionally) is like $400. The BB Kit is about $650. Heads are like $400. Do it ALL at once or you will either be disappointed or have a crappy running bike. You should have cams that can take advantage of the increase in displacement, too. $250.

The a gasket set from cometic.

If you are ****... you can tune this yourself with TTS. But it's not a 'stock' type of build.

Clutch spring is $25 or so.

OK. Just wanted to see if it was worth it, but it clearly isn't.

Thank you for the input.

Put the $$$ into the heads and a cam upgrade. Nice butt dyno feel.

Save UP for BB kit later.

You can do in steps if $$ tight.

#1... buy TTS
#2 buy cams like George (SEDeluxe) says.
#3 get heads ported
#4 exhaust
#5 BB Kit.

You can build one thing on to another as you go if you use a good plan that looks towards the future. Only thing will be the Tuner won't, by itself, show any riding improvements, but MUST be the base for the rest of your upgrades. If you are doing your own labor... the only thing will be buying gaskets as you progress.
