High idle when runnig hot ?
Noticed that my 2004 sportster seems to idle faster if its running a little hotter ( in the city or slow driving )
Anyone else notice this ?
Idles fine after a few miles or after a long 55 to +65 mph ride .
Any thoughts ??
Possibly sucking air ??
Thanks...............

RE: High idle when runnig hot ?
If it's a carbed bike, could be the ellevated temps are evaporating some of the gas in the intake manifold before combustion thus leaning it out slightly and increasing the idle speed. Mine does it too, I wouldn't worry about it unless it is a severe change.

Let the bike warm up, then adjust the idle to 1000-1100 rpm. DO NOT set it lower!!!! This will cause premature wear on your engine and can cause hesitation when taking off from a stop. If you don't have a tach, take it to a shop to have them do it, or loan you a tach. Setting the idle correctly is very important!!!!!
And yes, it may idle a little faster after a long ride until the temp stabilizes. That's perfectly normal.

Like I said, you're far better off keeping it ABOVE 1000 rpm. If the book says to set it at a certain speed, then it should be set at that speed. They set those limits for a reason. I've torn down engines that the owner's have idled too low and the bottom end showed a lot more wear than an engine idling at the proper speed. 700 is FAR too low, and 900 is the bare minimum. Besides, who cares what it sounds like idling. A Harley idling at 1000+ is what a Harley is supposed to sound like, I can't understand why people are so worried about how it sounds sitting still. Doesn't make sense to me..... I'd rather have an engine that will last a long time. I really don't give a **** what other's think about MY bike.
