Default engine heating up on highway?

i've got a 95 heritage softail.it runs about 180-200 on everything but the highway.when i get it onthe highway for about 15-0 mi it runs about 225-250. this seems to be to hot to me.i bought the bike about a month ago and the guy told me he thought it was scored pistons. no problem. ichecked the jets and found it had a 48-165.i changed the main to a 185 and itdidn't help a whole lot.it runs about 225 on the highway.i haven't checked the needle yet.it's supposed to have roller rockers and a cam.i got it for such a good price i couldn't pass it up.it also has a 2-1 hooker header.any help would be greatly appreciated.thanx,DAVE

Mine runs 260-280 and can hit 300 on a 110 degree day. You're really OK. Run synthetic oil and don't worry about it.

Now that is just too damn hot !

Hell, put a pot of cooking oil on the engine and you could fry french fries !

Bikes running in the 225-230 range is just fine. You just are a tad leaner at cruising speeds is all.

Mine will run 185-200 all day long on the backroads until I get on the interstate and wind it up. I have the tune set for economy so I will see 220-225 at 75mph on a 90 degree day. Nothing to worry about.

If you are convinced the jetting is taken care of the next reason oil temps go beyond normal is blowby. hot compressed gases go past the piston and heat the oil. A leakdown test will confirm if there is a problem here. Oil will smell really bad too, sorta like coal. Generally normal oil temps will be in the 180-230 range with occaisional hits of 250 for long idle period or city traffic. I've seen 300 once when my bike was stock, but with a good tune 240 in the worst conditions since that, with 210 being the norm. Keep in mind oil temps will go up under high load naturally but if you have too much blowby it will amplify this big time.
