Twin cam 88 cam chain tensioners
Well finally bit the bullet and got my indie mechanic to take a look at the tensioners while the exhaust was off. No guarantees because he could only properly see the outer one, but we both felt that the state of it would be a good indicator of how the inner had faired. My RoadKing Classic has just over 25000 miles on the clock, (15K after 1550 big bore kit) These have been high speed long distance miles cruising at a steady 85MPH for 3-400 miles at a time.
The evidence was plain, 30% plus wear but more worryingly severe pitting and discolouration to the wear area. This plastic would definitely have failed sooner or later. Without viualisation we can only assume the inner is in a similar condition.
It is impossible to tell, they may last for another 25K or they may collapse next time out, with that knowledge at the back of my mind there would be no peace of mind on runs. Replacement is the only solution! How to get to them, a full top end tank off strip down is a big job, expensive in terms of both money and time. The other possibility which I am now going with is to replace the standard push rods with the "sreaming Eagle" adjustable ones. Can be fitted without the top end strip and if the tensioners need replacing in another 25K miles then getting at them will be easier. If I want a cam upgrade to go with the 1550 kit then that should also be made easier.
I will keep you posted with progress. Should have my bike back next week.
