What does engine knock sound like?

These are air-cooled ancient machines in a way, and thus, do different things at different times, for no rhyme or reason to the beginner.
What I can say, with more specificity is, the bike definitely runs rougher in 1st gear (pulling away from a stop) when it's hot. It's not a small difference. I assume it has something to do with some metal bits swollen in the heat, and not 'sliding' as easily as they should. I have to use more throttle to get it to go, and not bog down or stall.
It's very predictable -- it only does that when the bike is hot, and I'm starting from a stop. At the same time, in the same conditions, if I turn the bike off, and try to start it again hot, the starter doesn't turn very well. I first thought the battery was toasted, until I started noticing the 'hot' correlation. Anytime the engine's real hot, the engine doesn't turn over well; it starts every time (so far), but it feels like it might not.
Good luck,
