Default Gas tank removal

Hi all,

I need to remove my gas tank on my 94 Softail and can't get the acorn nut that sits on the speedometer housing off. It just keeps turning and I can't get my hand under it to see if there is a nut. Can anyone help with this issue?

Thanks,
Rocky

On an 05, there is a long carridge head bolt attached to a plate on the tank. It has a square piece under the bolt head that is suppose to catch into a square slot. If it is spinning, I would try to pry the dash up GENTLY, while turning the nut.

On my '99 there is a bent spring piece of steel which has a screw and nut coming up through the speedo housing. My nut kept coming loose so I put a spot of loctite on the threads and ran into the same problem as you... I was able to reach up under the housing from where the tank pad was with a pair of long needle nose and hold the screw enough to get the nut off. I put that jam nut on the screw on extra tight with red loctite...

If you have an impact you may have some luck with it. It will spin the nut faster and possibly break it loose.
