Default Stock Air Box

What makes the stock air box restrictive? Is it the filter element or the air box design?

I'd say it is both, but I'm told if you change to a K&N filter, you will increase the air flow.

The back of the original airbox appeared to be made of a solid piece of plastic which sealed along the sides of the chrome air cleaner cover. The new one is exposed in the back, thus opening a lot of additional area in the back for air to flow in.

I had a K&N high flow air filter installed on my Train, and they left off the back plate for better air flow.

Cheers!

So when you do the “stage 1” you don’t really need to buy the $140 SE air filter kit? Can you just buy a K&N filter that fits into the stock box?

Clammy do you have the K&N part number for that filter?

Don't know the part number but the filter alone is about $75. Still, that's better than $140.

I doubt a K&N in a stock box will flow as much air as the Stage 1 will.

JBBOOKS, your bike looks to have the stock air box still on it, are you running stage 1?

I doubt if there's been much of a scientific study done regarding different backplates/airboxes/etc. My dealer told me that, according to their dino, the K&N filter in the stock airbox along with SE slip-ons and a good map will have as much power gain as the SE airbox and filter. The throat of the induction passage is wide open and unrestricted with the stock airbox. The airbox has a pretty nice opening in the front for, I assume, some ram effect. Again, the dino's the only way to tell and I have to compliment my dealer for saving me some $$. (Maybe he was just out of SE airboxes? )

The avatar picture shows the stock set up. I now run the Stage 1

Pic doesn't show it well (behind stock cover)
