How to Set Up CV carb on 03 Softail
Hi
Hope you can help me
I recently purchased have an 03 Softail Standard (carb) with V&H Big Radius Pipes and what appears to be a K&N Filter under the stock football cover
The carb has never been removed as far as I can tell (still had crimp clamp holding fuel line to carb)
Heres the problem
On frequent occasion it seems to spit back through the carb (worse in cold weather than in warm) while accelerating from low speed or while going off idle to accelerate into mid range
I took the carb off the bike and drilled the plug that covers the air fuel mixture screw
I counted the number of turns to seat it and it was 3 1/4 which seemed like quite a bit from what I read in this forum
I then put carb back on and turned the screw out an additional 1/4 turn (3 1/2 turns from full seat)
took it out for a ride and it still does spit or cough through carb though perhaps not as much
I never removed float bowls and checked pilot jet or main jet size ( am assuming it is stock)
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to getting bike to run properly ??
Thanks
George

RE: How to Set Up CV carb on 03 Softail
drill the slide 1/8- .50 slow jet .50 shim under needle 190-195 high jet set idle properly. and hang on i use this on most twin cams with pipes and aircleaners and it is a little rich but should pull right to redline. works best with s.e. ignition module and coil set nology wires s.e. plugs. my 01 dyna is set-up like this and my friends think it's a 95" engine hasen't been apart. harley has the shim and the jets.

Hey man what kind of bike do you have? I have a 2002 night train with 2 into 2 big radius and a screamin eagle heavy breather intake. Has a dead spot around high rpms. At full throttle. If you know anything that would help I'd appreciate it. I know I have a 190 main jet and either a 45 or 48 slow can't remember haha

IIRC, the OEM jetting is 45 slow and 175 or 180 main; you problem is the 45 slow. All good suggestions above, the most common setup is 48 slow and Sporty needle but shimming the needle works as well.
Don't get hung up on the number of turns out for the A/F screw. Unless of course you can go all the way in and the motor doesn't stumble and die or out 5 turns with no effect on idle. Find the spot where the motor is "happy" at idle. Even a 1/4 turn can make a difference. The key is patience and taking one step at at time.
If you do drill the vacuum port in the slide, install the lighter spring; throttle response will be quicker. The parts you need are available at:

CV Perfromance has been slow to respond lately from what I hear; call whoever you decide to buy parts from.
