Default Black exhaust

For those of you familar with my Fatbones build. I thought I would give you an update on the issues I've had with my black exhaust system. I added O2 bungs to the Paughco twin cam 2/1. and added a fishtail muffler. Sandblasted the chrome off. And tried 2 different black coatings. The first, and cheapest lasted a couple of weeks before turning white and flaking off. I then went to a higher temperature rated and costlier coating and followed the instructions and this lasted even less. At this point I was totally frustrated with the products available to us consumers. During this time I met a fellow at the local H.D. dealer who recomended a local company who builds headers and exhausts primarily for race cars. I contacted them and discussed my problem and was assured they could coat my system and that I would be happy with the results. We agreed on the price ($250.00) and a time frame for the turm around (3 days) I dropped the system off. And got a call to come get them in a day and a half. I installed them and I am completely satisfied so far. Granted I've only put 300 miles on them but they have not changed color in the least. If you need these services PM me and I'll be glad to pass the contact info on to you. And will give you a update as to how they are holding up.

The rear pipe has issues. I need to go ahead and get the heatshields and coat them.

Have you noticed the black pipes radiating more heat on your leg?

I thought black pipes were supposed to run cooler and because of that heat reduction, get more horsepower. That's what I heard, but I really don't know.

I would suggest something besides paint.

IMO you would be better off with Ceramic Coating the pipe, Last a lot longer than H/T paint.

The color black rediates more heat than the color, say, silver. Why wood or cole stoves are painter black.
Why, in all out preformance, the use of ceramic silver or even chrome on the "inside" of the pipe is often used. Turns the heat back in and helps the velocity. As th exhaust cools the volume gets less and therfore the volicity goes down. Thats all part of the tuneing.
Wraps insulate the pipe and do much the same.
But all out performance is the word here. Like at Bonniville.
Far as our Harley pipes go on the street, not hardly measurable. Black will radiate more heat and with an instrutment one can tell that, but not enough to really worry about.
Wrap can insulate a hot spot for comfort. Keep the Sweety in Short, Shorts maybe.
Your leg will get hot enough with any color.
