Cant pinpoint oil leak!
I apparently had both a primary leak and an engine oil leak. I replaced the main shaft seal and still saw oil. Went back in and put the baker bearing and seal in and am seeing oil. I have put that dye in all three but it just doesnt illuminate the best for me. The oil is coming from some where in between the primary and engine. Where would engine oil be coming from there???? The pan looks to be dry what else could it be? Does engine oil come from the shifter shaft oil seal? I would think that would be tranny. I have went in to my inner primary twice already and want this to be the absolute last time. Can someone please give me suggestions to look at more closely? I am gonna add more dye to my oil today and maybe take it for another spin. Its wet when I stop under the back of the primary and it will also leak some out while parked. Sometimes a drop or two and sometimes a tablespoon or two. I am just too poor to take it to a shop right now.

Spread the oil that was leaking on a piece of copy paper. Also spread both engine and tranny oil on separate pieces. Sure looks more like tranny oil. Smells similar but there is not much distinction to me. However my tranny was in need of 10 ounces which might click a light on in my head. Going back in one more time to replace that little girl of a 9 dollar part. The manual sucks for how to replace it. Do you just take the clip out in front of it and then pry it out? What do you use to put a new one in? Do you beat it in with say something like a pvc pipe or something or a deep socket?
thanks for all the help.

you can carefully take a couple of sheet metal screws and get them started in the seal and then use some pliers to pull it out or a seal remover works too. I perfectly sized socket works to drive the new seal back in. use some tape to cover the shaft before sliding the seal back on so you don't mess the seal up. also check the shaft to make sure there are no rough spots. it should be evident when you pull the primary where the oil has been running. If it is not from the shaft seal you might look else where.

Shifter shaft seal is easy to replace. Use an old ice pick or sharp punch to put a hole in it.
Then, thread a sheet metal screw into the hole, grab with pliers and pull it out. Trans. oil will leak out of the shifter shaft seal.. You also have a starter jack shaft seal in the inner primary ... Also a main transmission seal, shaft seal and quad seal on the transmission main shaft behind the drive pully. Be sure to use silicone on the back side of the inner primary, apply around the back side of the bolt holes where they meet the engine and trans. case.
Good rule to follow, never miss a chance to change a seal.. Another words, as much work as it is to pull the outer and inner primary, replace all the seals ( main shaft, starter jack shaft and shifter shaft) You will also need a new snap ring that goes over the washer that goes over the shifter shaft seal. Don't try to use the old one. If I can help you further, contact me at stroker1948@bellsouth.net. or www.strokercycle.com

shifter shaft seal
Thats the only seal we didnt replace. We replaced the primary bearing and seal with the baker set up so I took off the race. I also replaced the jack shaft seal. What about that jack shaft gear? Does anyone replace that?
So to put in a new seal take out the old one and beat it in with a socket? Does it go in easy? I tried tapping in the main shaft seal but it didnt work out. I better buy an extra seal
Thanks I will report how it goes. I also bought some more dye for the tranny to make sure where it is coming from is where its coming from.

The shifter shaft seal goes in easy, just gently tap by aligning the correct size socket over the seal. It's not like the main shaft seal, I have a tool I press those in with. The shifter shaft seal is easy to install.. No you don't need to replace the jack shaft gear unless of couse it's worn or chipped.. The problem you have with those is the shaft binding and sticking. Then the shaft , spring and busing need to be replaced. I'm sure you are ok there.

added dye to tranny
Well, if it can go wrong it will go wrong. My spare truck has a bad tire. My main pickup blew the in tank fuel pump and the radiator started leaking. I havent even been able to take it for a ride. Today I am gonna put a couple of hours on it. My tranny was down 10 oz so I am sure that seal is bad. I went yesterday and got a james double lipper. I am sure I will be able to tell when I put it on but which side goes out? Is it the flat side or the concaved side? I am assuming the concave side goes to the inside and the flat side stays out towards the primary? I got a cometic gasket for my main primary. Those sure do feel alot better. the indy says I dont need halomar on it either. feels like a foam covering on it. I already replace the main bearing and seal. I went with the baker setup and cut my race off. Mine was pushed into the pulley and my buddies was pushed out to the primary. They sure can move. I see why harley has left that behind. I know I should replace the seals behind the pulley but I dont have the special tool as I had returned it to the guy who loaned it to me. I have also already replace the jack shaft oil seal. Some night this week all this is going to take place. I only got one of those shifter seals as thats all they had. I hope I dont screw it up. Thanks for all the tips fellas and I will come back and let you know how it all turns out.
