Default 4 degree advance on a set of 211's?

I keep seeing references to advancing cams 4 degrees. Can anyone explain what that achieves and if it would be something I should consider on my mild stage 3 95" build?

Motor is running a set of 211's, milled and ported heads, 3 angle valve deal, adjustable pushrods, SE Heavy breather, V&H Big shot staggereds.

Its in an 05' Night Train.

Dyno:

Thanks for any assistance!

Advancing your cam by 4* will effectively change your intake closing 4* earlier (in the case of the 211 cam, from 45* to 41*). This will increase your low-end torque, decrease your top-end power. Whether it's something you should consider depends upon your goals. If your current setup feels a little 'lazy' on the low-end, this would be a way to give it a boost without having to change cams. It would get rid of some of the typically seen dip you have between 2500 and 3000 rpm.

Hmmm.... Well that makes sense! I think I will leave it be as its not a bagger and I ride it in the upper RPM range most of the time anyway.

Thanks for the info trooper!

You're welcome, Chazmanian!

Considering your bike and stated riding style, I wouldn't change a thing either.

You can't advance chain drive cams, only gear drive. Woods sells the +4 degree cam gear for gear drive cams.

If your bike is fuel injected and you are running a tuner you can change the timing in just the lower RPM's or the higher or whatever you want. You don't advance them across the whole board, you can fine tune it for the best of both worlds.
