Gas Tank Rust

Gas Tank Rust
I've been having problems with rust inside my gas tank, and I have been going through fuel filters, and my reserve keeps getting plugged with rust. I need to get it cleaned, and do something to keep it from rusting anymore. Is there a good way to clean it out? Also, is there a good way to keep it from rusting anymore? Thanks

If you have an older, carbureted bike about the only thing you can do to clean it is to use a solvent like eco-friendly parts washers use with a handful of steel ***** and shake it for a while and rinse the $hit out of it. there isn't a good way to prevent it from happening again though, if you don't ride the bike very often, drain the tank and spray some fogging oil in it.

You can do the ball bearing or even rocks if that is all you have to break loose the rust. Do that a few times. And rinse good each time. Then after you get all of the loose rust out of the tank that you can you need to seal it. There is a product called Kream. It puts a plastic like coating on the inside of the tank. I have always used it on a raw tank when building a bike. Have used it on badly rusted tanks after I got all the rust out that I could get out. Kream is a great product. If you do that I truely believe it will solve your problem. Or buy a new tank. But, you still need to Kream it.

A friend told me that I could put muriatic acid and water in the tank to dissolve the rust, and immidiately following, fill it with baking soda and water to neutralize the acid and keep it from rusting any further. Anyone know how true this is? I am planning on cleaning it, and using Por-15 to coat the inside and keep it from rusting, but I don't know how much I would need.
