Default Exhaust Gaskets?

Should there be any other type of gasket where my head pipes mate with the cylinder? All I have is the snap-ring and the collar that the bolts go through. Thanks?

There is a "crush" gasket (similar to a ring if tightly woven steel wool) in the port on the head. These are "usually" good for a couple re-uses, but when they get totally crushed, they need to be replaced. You'll have to use a pick or small screw driver to dig the old one out. There is nothing between the snap-ring & flange.

Actually, there ARE gaskets there. They just look so much like the head you can't see them. Not Kidding! They are a metallic mesh. If you pick at the edge of the hole with a screwdriver, they will become apparent.

What happens if that metallic mesh is not there and I didn't realize it? What effects on the bike?

poor excuse for a gasket if you ask me (I know, no one is asking....) I change 'em out any time I pull the exhaust. They just dont look to - beefy to me.

I changed mine out as well when I replaced the pipes. If you get popping, you most likely have a leak somewhere And that robs your performance

I believe it's been posted on this board that the SE exhaust gasket is a better design and is the desired replacement gasket. The stock gasket can compress and actually overhang into the inside of the exhaust port which may cause a small restriction. The SE gaskets don't do that.

What Neckball said. Use the SE gaskets. They are not tapered, they are square, and when properly torqued won't squash into the exhaust track to prevent good flow.
