Default SE211 cam

You can use the SE211 cam and not loose too much bottom end with a little compression. The cast high compression pistons are no more expensive that the cast Ft pistons and will make that bike a runner.

The wife loves it. See the signature below.

You said you are leaving it stock as far as compression an dyou want more bottom end, but yet you get all these guys telling you to go with SE 204 (require more compression) and SE 211 (requires more compression , little lazy on the bottom end).

Depending on the year of your bike, either the HQ 0034 or HQ 500 will add a lot of punch right off idle without increase in compression.
Andrews 21 or 26 will add also and the SE 203. You will hear the Woods 6 but it too thrives on more compression.

Default cam choice

It is a 95" right. That is not stock compression. If you are using FT pistions it should be around 9.2:1 using the stock head gasket. Select a cam with somewhere around 34* to 36* intake close for midrange on a light bike. Something like the SE203 which can be found cheep. If you went with the Cometic .030" head gasket or are willing to change the head gasket, the compression will bump up to around 9.5:1 which would be good for the Andrews 37.

If you are changing pistions and are not doing headwork I would go with the setup I describbed above; cast 10.25 high compression pistons with the SE211 cam. That set-up will pull to the rev limiter and have better than stock low end torque. Possibly the best of both worlds for a light bike and your description of your riding style.

How do I know? I am not a professional tuner but I have owned bikes with the SE203, SE211 and SE251. I have ridden bikes with the HQ, Woods, SE253 and SE255 cams. Not to mention the old days of Sifton cams on the iron head sportster.

Why does everyone "diss" the SE203 cams? My bike has gone from 12 mph to 65 mph in 4.003 seconds (according to my data logged on the road via my SEST). I think that is fairly quick for a softail. Also why does everyone say you can only run stock compression with SE203 cams and SE204 cams require more compression? The CCP is pretty close on both of these cam sets due to intake closing point. Isn't CCP one of the indicators on how well a certain set-up can perform? Thanks, Calvin. PS: SE211 has a nasty sounding idle that is coooool, but I wanted my power from 2K to 5K and built my build with that in mind; and yes it will pull very strong all the way to the rev limit.

Just saying, he said "stock" compression. Yep, going with a different piston or cometic .030 gasket will up the ante and then the other cams do come into play!

Never dissed the 203, not a bad bolt in, bu there are better out there IMO. I too have run a sh*tload of cams, 203, (never admitted it..lol), Woods TW5G, Woods 6, Woods TW 400-6 and some others including now the HQ575 and have and ridden a couple of HQ 500s (0034) in stock engines.

The 211 is a cam for a lighter bike and pulls good from the midrange and up, but it too thrives on a compression bump.

It looks like I found a good price on a 203. If I put the Cometic .030 in instead of the .040, will I have to ditch the stock rods?

No, your good to go with the stock rods and a .030 gasket.

I was going with the Woods 6 but that SE203 and the HQ500 got my attention, I'm looking for a mild cam with low end pull.

Dalton, what was your likes/dislikes on the 400-6? Have you ran or do know anything about the T-Man 662-1? How's the DD7 going?
