Default 103 kit

I have a 2008 Street Glide with 2K miles on it. I would like to install a 103 stage 2" kit. I was at the dealers today and was talking to the service rep. He told me the shop was needing to take in some work and if I wanted to put in a 103 Kit, they would give me 30% off the kit and install it for $700. At the time I thought this was a good deal and told him I would consider it. I have several questions. Is that a good price for labor? Is there a better kit on the market for comparable price? Is this something I could do my self? Should I have my heads ported? Anyone know of a shop in the southeast that can port my heads? I've never been into a HD engine, but have raced and build several cars (engines, trannmissions, rearends) from the ground up. I don't mind the dealer doing it, but thought it would be nice if I could do it myself since the warranty will be lost anyway.

You can easily do this yourself if you have any mechanical aptitude at all. And if you are going that route, I suggest you dont get hung up on the HD hype. If you are going to spend money, you can get a good reliable kit such as from Headquarters. You can have your stock cylinders bored and save some money.

Most dealers get 8 - 10 hours labor for installing a big bore kit. The price you were given will most likely end up about 2-$300 higher for gaskets, oils, and miscellaneous items. And yes, if you are going big bore, do the heads and cams at the same time. Again, check your aftermarket builders for information, the difference in cost is minimal and you get so much more.

Thanks guys. Now I have another couple question. I know everyone says the HD parts don't measure up, but the price is good if your not after big numbers. I've been thinking about the "103 Stage 4" kit. It has the 110 heads, larger throttle body and 260 cams. Is it streetable? Would I be better off with "103 stage3 and ported heads"? I know you can get better number with ported stock heads, but I'm not sure I need that. I just want a reliable engine with passing power when loaded. Wife and I combined weight is 470#.

Nothing unreliable about having your OEM castings re-worked.
Tons or dealerships offer "specials" this time of year, to get you in, as their business is really baised on sales of bikes/clothing/accessories.
Keeps the service guys from standing in the unenjoyment line, as the mark on the Geniune parts is so high, makes you think that your really getting value.
Stack that stuff up against the aftermarket, and the "value", all of a sudden, flys away like a big-assed bird.

I have that exact kit on the dyno right now and it is making 109/109. This kit came complete with a 58mm TB. The issue is leaking intake seals. I have the dealer making sure the TB is correct as I can definitely see a fit problem with the 110+ heads and the 58mm TB. The 260 cam is one of HD's high horsepower cams, the low end torque is not that good. This bike is a 2008 Ultra with a single rider only so it will be okay eventually. For 2-up riding and the need for more bottom end torque there is probably a better cam IMO.

Eddfive, Is you bike on 08 model? I ask because, I noticed there are two different kits and the TB are different. 08 TB is electronic for TBW. Although they probably fit the same. I am concerned that the cam's powerband maybe too high. I'm thinking of substituting 251 cams.

I agree with eddfive, that cam is really a top end hp cam that really doesnt add much to the torque in the riding range of what I would consider normal bagger riding.

You could look into the HQ 575, Woods 6 or 480-44 cams.

you figure a woods 6 in a 103 will get you up around 110hp/tq + or - with a set of baisley super stock heads and 9.8 compression.

bump the compression 10.5 cmp, cam tw8-6 compression releases and roller rockers 115-117 same heads.
and reliable

Default Wood 8

George is right on about the 8 cam.
We've seen 119 hp and 125 ft/lbs with those in the 107" drop-on cylinders,our heads,51 mm HPI, D&D Fatcat.
