Default Andrews vs. S&S Gear Drive Cams

I was just wondering if anybody had any experience with the S&S gear drive cams as opposed to the Andrews gear drive cams. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get away from the tensioner time bomb on my TC88 and don't know which to go with. Anybody know where I could find any comparison/review info here on the forum or on the www?

the gears that Andrews uses are made by S$S.

Andrews has more grinds avalible to help you tailor you bike for riding style.

S&S grinds are more HP oriented.

If these were my only two choices, I would look hard at the Andrews line.

Fortunatly, Head-Quarters and Woods have even better grinds avalible!

check both of theses places out and make some calls, you will thank me!.

Be sure & measure your pinion run-out before you buy gears. If not well within recommended spec, then conversion to the newer roller chain/hyd tensioner is fast becoming a popular option & is showing itself to be very robust. Jims uses this set-up in their 131" TQ monster.

"the gears that Andrews uses are made by S$S."

Hmmm, I think you have that backwards mentor. Andrews was making the gears AND grinding the cams for S&S (like they do for HQ & several others), but last I heard S&S started grinding their own cams & had a different place producing the gears as well. Same quality as before? ...I wouldn't bet on it.

Sleeps is correct......Andrews makes the gears. S&S sticks their name on them.

This the way I always understood it.

If it is the other way around then why is it when you order Andrews gear driven cams you get an S&S gear set? If they are making them, why not put your own name on it when you sell it with your own product.

I would like more info in this myself. I have inspected and installed pretty much every major players cams, and Woods is the only brand admitting up front that Andrews in cutting thier cores.

the S&S and HQ cores are different VS. the Woods and Andrews. (not that it realy matters)

Thumbs up S&S vs Andrews

I went to a shop with the same questions on my mind. Which to use.. Results were that Andrews has more options based on what was already done to the motor. I was given two options .510 or .570 lift and opted for the 510s as the 570s put initial torque range a little higher than I wanted. I was looking for the hole shot and not the high end, also get rid of the chain tensioners primarily before the funny (not so funny) noises start.
I hope this helps......

A Wood 6 will beat up on an S&S .510.
We did back/back on that almost a decade ago.
Can be viewed on Bob Wood site. www.woodcarbs.com
