Unhappy engine case studs repair

Ok..I have an issue with the engine studs on my 1988 FXRS...I had blown a head gasket...one of the studs had pulled about half the threads out...has anyone had this happen to them?..and is there a way of making the repair without having to pull the cases out of the frame..anyone know if there is a drill jigg/tool out that would insure drilling the hole straight?..if anyone out there has had this happen and they did the fix any input would be appreciated...(I'm thinkin possibly about just getting a whole new engine and being done with it)

There's a jig for fixing it. Depends on how thick the aluminum is which fix is better. You can do it without taking the whole motor apart.

Default fix

I would wonder why only one stud had a problem and check them all for streching. I would take the engine out and send it to the factory for a reman. or helicoil and replace "all" studs.

Might have been over-torqued at one time.
Seem 'em hold once repaired, and have seen 'em not.
Could heli-coil all for studs, and install a flanged cylinder, with a 4-bolt cylinder head bolt pattern, from the King. 3 13/16", and turn it into a 97" Evo.

Did someone re-torque them without doing the correct procedure? Chances are if one is stretched thay all may be and should be replaced. Try a helicoil but get ready to scrap the case unless you can overbore but I doubt it. I don't know that a reman will do the job. You may find you send it all the way back and they reject it. If the case is ruined find a salvaged bike and swap for a used motor IMO.

Something like this happened to me with a head. At the cam support plate. All the threads came out. I heli-coiled it and no problem here now.
I don't think I overtorqued this bolt. What I think may have happened was during the build I took off this plate more that once to figure clearances. This after running. I think this blind hole had engine oil in it (my bad) and the hydrolic lock there just let the steel threads of the bolt just pull out the aluminum threads in the head.
For some reason I had always been afraid of pushing through the bottom of the blind hole. Can go round and round I believe.
