Default Rocker Boxes

I am looking to replace my rocker box covers and boxes from aluminum to chrome. I looked in the service manual and under Fuel tank removal I can remove completely or partial. Can I get away with partial? Once there off is the roker box removal and install pretty straight forward? I have a service manual but some procedures aren't explained very well. I'm not an HD wrench by all means but I want to try...thx

Trying to work around the tank is a pain in the a$$. Just pull it off. The amount of time you think you will save not pulling it will be lost ten fold working around it. I also chase all the holes and bolts that had loctite and put new. Some chrome parts are not perfect so follow the torque sequence and specs for a leak free install.
