I have a 73 xlch 1000 sporty. It has an 38mm bendix carb. All of a sudden the bike idles fine but once you bring it off idle it starts to miss and backfire out the pipes. What could be my problem? Timming? Gunk in carb?

 

Could be a lean condition, points worn down which retards the timing, fouled spark plugs, or broken valve spring
