How often to clean open air filter?

So I just took the factory cover off my Big Sucker and put on a modified cover so the filter is exposed...

How often do I need to worry about cleaning the filter now that it's not being fully covered by the stock cover? Are there any signs to look for or rules of thumb I can go by?

It depends how much you ride and how **** you are. When I ran open air filters, I cleaned them at least 2-3 times a year. Besides dirt and bugs getting in the filter slots, the sun will dry out the filter.
