Default Which Locktite for Cam Gears?

Hi guys,

I'm just finishing up a self install of Andrews (S&S) gear drive cam set and their instructions simply say "apply loctite retaining compound" when it comes to the bolts on the pinion gear and outer cam gear. I chose blue last night, but before I button it up, I could change to red real easy.

I haven't used red on anything yet because it scares me to think heat is needed to remove items in the future. The cam support plate itself has blue recommended for it. The original gears from H-D don't seem to have had any locktite on them at all, and were real easy to break loose with a breaker bar and foot on the brake.

What I want to know is which and why?

Thanks,

Red takes heat and extreme force to remove. Unless they called for it, I wouldn't.

Default Loctite 262 (RED)

My book says use Loctite 262 (red) :

I'm looking at the install sheet for SE 203 cams and it says:

.....INstall NEW flange bolts and washers as follows:
a) Ensure all threads are clean and free from oil then apply Loctite Priner 7649....

b) Apply Loctite High Strength Threadlocker 262 (red, supplied) to threads of the flange bolts.....

! WARNING
Failre to use Loctite 262 (red) may result in a joint that will not maintain proper load and may loosen uner certain circumstances
.

The kit I have included a small pillow pack of it.

From Loctite:
Loctite® 262™ Threadlocker is a permanent threadlocker for fasteners up to 3/4" (20 mm) in diameter. Excellent for preventing rust and corrosion in extreme chemical/environmental conditions.

Used a lot of 262 red when my brother was drag racing, never had to heat a bolt and they all came off with no problem no extreme force needed. Sure its a bit stiffer to break loose but not bad. When I changed cams a couple years ago I had no problem taking it apart with the red and red was used when it was put back together.

Definately Red, and I agree with all.. It's not as permanent as they lead you to believe. You will be able to take it back down with no heat or problems.
