Default Need some help with jetting mikuni

I ride a 2005 FXSTB Reinhart exhaust, crane ignition, 45mm Mikuni flat side carb, and the engine is a 95ci the heads and cams are still stock. I purchased the carb to work with s&s heads in the future but for know they will remain stock due to cash flow problem. To the problem, the bike is a little tough to start when cold, it pops alot on decel and it stalls out when you give it gas after decel the plugs look white so I suspect it is running lean it idles good after its warm. Do you think I should be changing the pilot jet or the needle position or both. The jets and the needle are as they come out of the box right know.

IMOP a 45mm Mikuni is way to much of a carb for yor set up. I would remove that 45mm and put back on the CV carb until you do the heads & cams. Still I would really consider trading in the 45mm for the 42mm. The 45mm is alot of carb, more for the Big,Big Bore Boys with alot more then 95" motors and Higher Comp. Not that a 45mm won't run correct with 95" after tuned, I just think a 42mm would run better for what you have, and probably after heads and cams.
Just my 2 cents, I'm sure someone else will be along soon with theirs. Good luck..

The 45mm is to big for your combo. 42mm is what you need.

Once I put S&S heads and 585 gear drive cams, 10.3:1 high compression pistons you still think the carb is to big?

Sorry, man but yeah I think so. I'm running a S&S Supper E carb with 10.5:1 and Supper stock heads and my little Supper E is plenty enough. I was told that until I go over 100" that my Supper E would be just fine. I would think that the 42mm would be in the same ball park as the Supper E at least that's what I've been told.

Just my 2 cents...Ima new guy here so with all do respect to thoes who know much more than I....I tuned a 45 for my 96" S&S. It took a while...changed the main jet and the pilot jet, moved the needle and adjusted the air screw, I fired it with a Crain Hi 4 single fire with irediom plugs..unless your willing to get into it up to your elbows, like Bad Boy and Roadking said, go with a 42.....Oh, I sure did like the way it lit up the 2 into 1 Hooker Header!!! Lots of low end on that 240 rear tire, I never smoked the rear but would have to replace it after 2500 mi.[ I like a soft compound, more road grip] OK, like I said with all due respect..thanks guys

I agree with everyone. My best friend got a 45 and its hard to detune the 45 than it is to tune the 42. 45 is just too big for anything smaller than 107 cubic " .

Have to agree with the consensious here. I'm sure it's possible to get the 45 tuned such that it runs decent, but the 42 will tune in easy. In fact, they are pretty darn versatile "right out of the box".

Thanks for all the response guys for know I tuned in the 45 with my dyna ignition and it is running great hopefully I will have my heads and cams soon will see how it runs then if I find it hard to tune I will trade in the 45 for a 42. That is one fantastic carb though easy to adjust and great design, I gained alot of tourque and hp with that upgrade
