labfreak: Head porting is NOT like buying a piece of chrome or a set of wheels--porting heads is part of a combination of parts which should provide a performance increase that meets your goals and fits your riding style. It doesn't make much sense to "talk" about head porters unless you know what kind of performance you want for your riding style. Integral to the "success" of the process will be cam selection, compression, etc. You could have a beautiful set of ported heads that are a waste of money without the correct cams, compression, exhaust, tune, etc.

Simply planning to get heads ported is putting the cart before the horse without a performance goal to fit your riding style IMO.

And if you don't know what compression releases are, you are probably a long way from making informed judgments. Give Doug at HQ, Steve at GMR, et al. a call and talk to them about what you hope to achieve with the performance of your bike--they can tell you what you will need.

On the other hand, if you just want to tell your riding buddys that you have "ported and polished" heads over a beer or two, go for it.

To everyone out there,Dan Vance Racing will do an incredible job on your heads. his work is flawless and turnaround fast.my s.e. cnc ported heads part # 16925-02b were flowing ok numbers but velocity was only about 200 c.f.s. after a little of Dan's work they were fowing over 300 c.f.s that is a whopping 30% increase. which i should also say is more than some of the super stock heads selling for 2000 or more.he is only one of a few i know that takes his approach to flow,swirl,travel,etc. no i am not a certified harley tech but have quit a few years of experience in the m.c field. my uncle was the first harley/indian dealer mechanic on the olympic penninsula here in wa. state. i am 60 years young and building my bagger with Dan's heads and work he has done for me. his finish on the bore and hone are second to none and his heads are way beyond the typical port and polish, just because they are shiny don't mean squat! if you are looking for a real one on one professional work and heads built to your riding needs, talk to Dan, you willglad you did. also go to his website. to everyone else i am a ase certified tech for ford,gm,chrysler,also past sales rep for napa in wa. ore. and alaska. also was rep for frieghtliner,sportchassis division,show contoller,and info man at bike week ,biketoberfest in daytona florida and sturgis. i also raced for harley davidson of tacoma before joing the army in "67".while growing up in the m.c. field i was taught many things by my uncle when it came to machine work,balancing flywheels,etc. and when it came to a part we could not get we made it. i believe one of the first books in the shop i read was,now you old timers, correct me if i am wrong, was "uncle Franks" guide to balancing flywheels.i no longer have the book. i only tell you this as the way Dan does his heads is a very well tried and trued method.
as far as the compression releases go,every harley should have one as far as i am concerned. it just saves so much unwanted strain and stress on ALL components, mechanical and electrical.ohby the wayi taught electronics in the army.
my ride is a 2000 flht 95" 005" over s.e. heads-modified by Dan vance.s.e. httc ported pistons,jugs bored and honed by Dan Vance Racing,s.e. chromemoly pushrods,s.e.lifters,t-man tr590g cam riding in a fueling 7050 billit cam plate and fueling race oil pump,ist ignition,51mm cv modified with kit,s.e. cly.stud kit,tp roller rockers stock ratio, tp engineering pro vent billit rockerboxes with integral supports.i am running a hooker 2 into 1 ceramic tuneable exhaust-pull the core out- heh heh-. my switch to rb exhaust and use there blackhole. anyway to all of you out there please tell Dan Vance i recommend him very highly.
if it makes any difference,ask yourself why would i send my heads from wa. state to ct. for work? his is better and not the run of the mill port and polish with that i bid you all a good day and ride safe!!! e-mail lnsn@wavecable.com.
one more thought, Dans work is so good i think that American Iron should do a article on him and his work. he doesn't just do heads but bores cases, weld flywheels bores and hones the man builds complete engines at ridiculous low prices. I have used Dan Vance racing for heads. Dan has helped me out tremendously, he knows his stuff. He did a set of heads for me and a friend of mine. Both very satisfied customers. My build is a 95", ported and decked heads by dan, Andrews 37g cams and a D&D fatcat exhaust. It makes 100hp/103/tq and pulls very hard. All the power is where you can use it making it a very fun ride. I have called and e-mailed Dan a million times with questions and he always returns my calls and e-mails fast. I will use him again for the next build.

hey labfreak, about the bead blasting,think about it as not holdin the flow up but suspsending the fuel to be atomized properly,with aflat smooth shiny surface it can actually create a drag reducing the flow and the velocity. ask dan, he knows!!!!

Unlike 48devil,i won't be able to give an elegant discription or any form of professional background being slightly more inclined to be more of biker who likes a beer. But i'm not without some knowledge.

Over here in europe head work for harley is very pricey as so little competition. So if you want to achieve a faster ride you look to the home of the Vtwin, well after a great deal of reading various harley sites i decided what i basically wanted and following advice which is given here as well i contacted several of the companies which have already been mentioned and Dan Vance. Granted they all replied but Dan email came back with a list of questions, the usual, Stuff bike? rider? riding stlye ?etc etc,

Most everybody else's came back as a price list of what seemed to me expensive posibilities. But i wanted more get up and go. So i phoned Dan at what was the middle of the night over here just to make sure that there was a guy at the end of ebay shop, and not just some guy who wouldn't know the differance between his backside from his mothers face.

So about 7000 miles ago i put a package together with Dan and i really couldn't be happier, do i have dyno numbers to back this up! No i dont!, but i will tell you its not seen the back of v twin tire since it was installed. Yes it still gets beaten bysome of the sportsbike riders.

Yes i'm sure some other porter may have squeezed out a bit more power, but as you all know performance comes as a package. But could i have done this upgrade with out Dans competative prices? No because i would then have had to skip some other part of the package. I am Hoping to put an Evo style engine together with Dan this winter (that desperate urge to put a bike together from scratch before your 4....) I don't know if he still does but he used to give a money back guarantee what more can you say.
