Default Yep - another intake/exhaust question

I've searched the forum through and through and yet to find answer to these questions:

Can someone explain why, according to the HD website, the SE Heavy Breather + SE Slipons (Fat Bob in my case) are 50 state street legal, but if you install the SE Stage I A/C, in order to be street legal (50 state), you have to use the stock exhaust?

I got what I guess is good deal from another member today on the SE Stage I A/C and want to either go with Rush or the SE Slip ons for my fat bob. Want a little sound, but not deafening, as I may be going deaf in my right ear anyway. I want increased power, hence the SE A/C. Performance wise, is there any reason with the proper download/map/fuel tuner, that I can't use the SE Stage I air cleaner and the Fat Bob SE Slip Ons? Thanks. So much info out there, and so many combinations, pretty confusing stuff.

Thanks in advance.

Watie

I'm going to assume you have an 07 or 08. The new stage 1's are epa legal therefore they have to run the stock mufflers to guarantee epa compliance. I wouldn't mess with the stage 1, it's useless on the new bikes. If I were you I would get the plug and play from www.nightrider.com . It's two small wires that plug into the O2 sensors wiring. Takes 5 minutes to install and basically fools the computer into thinking it's at 14.7 Air/Fuel ratio but it's really at 14.2. My friend just did this install and absolutely loves it. It cured all the problems he was having. Harleys usually are happiest at 14.1 and this is pretty close. They are only like $65.00 and they work. Your FI system is closed loop so it will compensate for minor changes. No need to spend big bucks!

Yes, my bike is an '08. I understand the EPA thing, but what is the difference between a Stage I air cleaner and the big protruding heavy breather and the aftermarket air cleaners, and why would the SE heavy breather be okay with the SE slip ons, but the Stage I not? That's what I'm confused about.

Really? Your the first one I've heard say this. Most say a stage 1 is the most important upgrade to do to a new (07/08) ride.

lonewatie,
I apologize, I didn't notice the, A/C, after the stage one reference, I was thinking you meant a download. Your correct, that makes no sense at all.
Skivvy, I meant the stage 1 download, not the air cleaner. That was reader error!! If you mean download then my statement is truthful, at least as far as I know what is the truth. Now I sound like Clinton!! My friend had the download done but it did nothing for him. He had an 07 and had a lot of problems. A real lemon. He traded it in for an 08 but it wasn't perfect either. I talked him into the nightrider plug and play and like I said, he loves it. Nightrider has a more expensive device that allows you to chose the air/fuel ratio you want but it's over $300.00. Still, neet stuff.

On that note, would I need to "fool" the fuel system on my 07 Heritage Softail if I put on drag pipes? If I put the pipes on the O2 sensors will be disconnected.
