Ok, not completly. Built lots of V8's. No Big Twin internal experience. I've done heads before but thats it.
How tough is it to install a "Bolt on" cam such as Andrews 54?
I'm a good wrencher and all, just havent ever tackled a cam install before.
Thanks

If you know how to turn a wrench and have the service manual, should be fairly easy for you. You will need a press or find a place that can press the bearings in and out of the cam plate. I don't own a twin cam, but if I did, I would put gear drives in and get rid of that stupid chain and tensioners.

Do a search, I have been asking about this alot, and it is easy for '06 and up dynas, apparently, but picking the right cam can be a head-trip (for me it has been[:@]) no pun intended.....
look at this site www.bigboyzcycles.com they have a great cam comparator.

Some "special tools" are "required" although some guys are saying you can wing it without them, I am accumulating these tools, and as soon as I get this done I would be willing to loan them to you, unless you are in a hurry. Good luck, keep us posted on how it goes![&:]

Service manual, service manual. Service manual.

Will need some gaskets, HD sells a set for cam changing.
o6 and up dana's and all 07's and upcan use a cam locking tool. Makes it easier to torque down the bolts for the cam.
No pressing with these, piece of cake.
Need small torque wrench for in.lbs. and a 3/8 for bigger torque. Harbor frieght sell for real good price. HD spects are wider than the wrench spects so theirOK for home work.
Will need adjustable or Quickie pushrods. Quickie or SE quickie you can cut the old pushrods out and not open the top up.

Then for the tuning. If you stick with SE cams, and they have some good ones, you can tune with the SERT real easy, pretty much. Comes with good maps. Otherwise you are about to learn a lot about Fuel Injection. In this world, not a bad thing to know really. Gonna need that knowledge. What it is.

You can do it.

I know all about fuel injection. I have a power commander installed.
Tell me more about the pushrods. What should I buy? I think i'm gonna go with the andrews 54H cam. Thanks for the help.

We feel that the S&S pushrod kit works well, and you may want to take a good look at a Bob Wood 6 cam.
Tried and true. We've used his camssince the mid-nineties. 100 hp 110 ft/lbs. easily within reach,set-up correctly.

Unless you shave the heads alot you can use the stock push rods with a Andrews 54 cam. The base circle diameter is less than stock, I've heard .020. If you change the head gasket to a .030 Cometic it is almost a wash. Andrews lists that cam for up to 10 to 1 compression so you might want to bump yours up. I just installed GMR 98" bored OEM cylinders with CP +3 cc pistons and a .030 head gasket with 54n cams. The measured ccp is 180 both cylinders. Measured the lifter preload at .112 with stock push rods which I figured was close enough. I've got 450 miles on the build and the value train is quieter now with the new chain system than when it was stock with the old.
