Default S&S air and exhaust

If someone already brought this up, I missed it. I read an article in a magazine, I think American Iron, about the S&S upgrade on an '07 96 inch. They claimed the ecm was able to adjust to the changes in 15 minutes, and gained 10hp without a reprogram. I remember the old speed density mustangs were able to adapt to changes like these, as long as the base engine remained the same, but I don't know if the harley map sensor and ecm have that kind of range. Either they were on the verge of lean power meltdown, or a lot of guys are spending money they don't need to on fuel managementafter these simple mods.

Did they do that at Idle or did they take the bike out for ride with some type of way to read the a/f. Any one here that tunes I dont think they will agree with that? S&S will tell you you have to remap the bike or try to sell there system to you. With the narrow band 02 it will try to run 14.7/15.1 in cruise mode.(closed loop) But I know what I have seen you change the stock air cleaner and stock slip ons I see 15.1 and higher a/f in closed loop.(Cruise mode). With out anY type of way to change the stock program. See what other tuners think and see. My 2 cents.........

They had the bike strapped on a dyno, inside the shop for the entire deal. They didn't say how they ran it for the 15 minutes. I agree that the O2s could probably compensate during closed loop, though yes, they would still try to run 14.7 to 1. I'm really curious about the ecm and map sensor, if they have the range to adjust, and if the map is accurate enough to recognize the extra air. I would assume that if the stock filter restricted airflow, the map would start reading a vacuum, and if airflow was free, it would read that as well. If the harley ecm uses that technology during WOT, then if the range of adjustment is available, I don't see why it couldn't adjust, at least somewhat.

I'm one of those guys thatbelieves if companies could sell more products, whether you need them or not, they will steal your wallet and clean out your bank account if you let them. I'msure programmers work and do a goodjob if set up right, but I'm curious about when they're really necessary.I just haven't read or heard a real clear answer, and really wonder if that extra10hp willkeep the motor alive and well,or have your bike in the shop.

I guess I could quit being a lazy *** and rig up a volt meter on the O2, maybe strap it to the bars......
