RE: Cam chain -adjusting shoes - gear drive etc...
What gear drives are folks talking about? Is the gear built into the new cam OR can the existing cams be changed from chain to gear?
If you need to change the cams with gear drive, which ones are best suited if I am trying to keep stock or a little more performance?

Straight from Andrews here is what they say:
Andrews Twin 88 camshafts are available with S & S gear drives. Engines with gear driven cams show a 4 hp gain over cams with chains. If less power is needed to turn the camshafts, more power gets to the rear wheel. Also, gear drive cams do not have chain tensioner shoes to wear out. When deciding what cam to use in your 88 engine, the most important consideration is the proper match between compression ratio and intake
cam duration. For best street performance, the static compression pressure should be around 175-180 PSI. Drag motors can handle still higher static pressures. Lower static pressure of 160 PSI are great for all around riding.
So yes you are changing the timing chain with gears. I am probably puting in a 21G that is a mild cam.

The gear drive is used to replace the stock chain drive set up that use a spring loaded tensioner that has a plastic shoe that rides on the chain to keep tension. Down side is that the tensioners have a bad habit of wearing out and allowing plastic to go through the engine, worse case if they break and the the cahin becomes unloaded and most time it will damage the bearing so you get plastic and metal through the engine so other items get damaged as well. The shoe wear issue really is no ryme or reason, I have seen bikes with low miles look very bad and seen 80K and they look new.
Here is a picture of the gear drive set up showing the complete gear drive . Your current system has a chain to drive the cams on the engine side of the cam plate and a chain to connect the crank to the cams.

RE: Cam chain -adjusting shoes - gear drive etc...
I just had my '03 TC 88 cams, chains and shoes replaced for a SE 103 upgrade. The rear shoe was toast, I mean metal to metal. I had 40K on the set that was removed. The front shoe looked new compared to the rear shoe.
I stayed with the chain drive cams, but I did put in SE adjustable pushrods instead of the SE perfect fit pushrods. I also changed to SE lifters upgrade.
Changeing the cam chain drive to gear drive isn't cheap, but, I was careful to not burn any bridges.
