Default TW6 vs Andrews 54

Most of you techs out there have replied to my posts, or pm at one time or another. Here's another question. If I were going to finish my 103" build with a good cam, please tell me what I should use. Here's where I am so far- Jugs bored, HD 103 flat top pistons, PCIII, SE Heavy Breather, V&H Big Radius (I know- not the best pipes). I understand that for a "stock" build, if I use the SE 255 cams, I should expect 90 hp/ 95 tq. I haven't done any headwork. Iread a post from either Donk 316 or FXRP that said to spend the $$ on headwork, as opposed to gear drives, in a 2007 or later model. Do I NEED gear drive cams? Or will bolt ins do the trick? Also what kind of output can I expect with the Woods 6 cams? What can I expect with the Andrews 54s? Thanks in advance for putting up with my stupid questions.

2007-2008 production bikes ( 06 Dynas also?) do not need gear drive cams. They have the upgraded cam chain setup over the 99?-06 TC bikes. You can do it if you want too but totally not required.
If it comes down to gear drive or head work on a 07-08 then its an easy decision.
I would go with the Andrews 54 cam in 103, or a 96 for that matter with worked heads and bumped compression. But thats just my opinion.

**Edited for clarity as usual...

I have not had any experience with the Andrews 54s but have heard they are a pretty decent setup. The Woods 6 is a great cam for building torque, and there are a lot of people running them and builders using them. You do not neet to go to a gear drive setup on your 07 as the new style hyd tensioners and chain seem to have eliminated the tensioner shoe wear issue. Spend the money on some good head work.

We have not built a combination with the 54 yet. I do believe that it is a very good cam.We have been using the 6 cam since the mid-nineties, and we "know" how that cam, and Bob Wood's other grinds respond, to certain things. We won't fix what isn't broke. We would use the 6.

He's another alternative, no one ever mentions the Zippers products on this site but they are very popular on the CVO site. www.zippersperformance.com/catalogue/showproduct.asp?cat=588&prod=2186
You would be using the 577 cam.

I just did the Zippers stealth 103 build (not on their site yet) with the 575 cams, , haven't dynoed it yet, but feels real good. I was looking for a low compression torque motor.

Lots of good choices, good luck

Thanks for all of the input. Here's where I am right now- I've decided not to go with head work at this time. I really don't want a higher compression engine. I want to assemble this just like it is.....V&H Big Radius, SE Heavy Breather, SE Flat Top Pistons, and cams. Chain Drive cams....Just don't know which cams to use. I'm open to suggestion.....Don't know much about the Woods or Zippers Cams, but I've had a few people say Andrews 37H, 44H, and 50H. I've checked the Andrews Website, and all of these cams have stock lift. My biggest concern now is compression. I'm not sure exactly where my compression rate it right now. The 37H says stock to 9.5-1; 44H says 9.5-1 +; 50H says 9.5-1 to 9.8-1. I'm guessing that my compression is somewhere in the 9.5-1 range. Ideas? Opinions? Suggestions? Professional Experiences? Thanks guys....

Check out the Big Boyz calculator page www.bigboyzcycles.com/calculators.htmand you can plug in your build and cams it will give you compression ratio, cold cranking, etc. Very helpfull site.

I plugged in some numbers for you in the above site, 103,Andrews 54H,87cc heads, 040HG and the cold compression was 9.76:1.

My 103" build is being done right now.
I went with Andrews 37H, SE flat top pistons, V&H true duals with V&H slip ons, SERT, and mild port work on the heads. Compression should be a little more than 9.5:1
I'm hoping it's done this weekend.

The 6 will thrive @ 10:1. You can push it to 10.4:1, but 10 is fine.
Power from off idle to 5500, with a good set of heads.
IF heads are used, and a good tune with a good exhaust, easy to expect 100 hp and 110 ft/lbs with a bolt-in cam, no less.
Fantastic fuel economy also.
