if you have a thundermax with auto tune you can set your idle but I think it probably is not good for your bike with that slow of an idle, there is a reason they are set that high mostly because of the electronics on the bike it has to be charging good also to get good oil pressure, your buddies bike probably isnt getting the oil pressure it should be. "nice rough idle?" lol. he's absolutely right. the sound you're referring to is characteristic of a carbed single cam motor with its idle speed set too low.

You'll never get it down to make it sound like an Evo. I believe it has to stay around 1000/1100 rpm or it will starve the heads of oil. Putting it lower is at your own risk.

All of the reasons for a about 1000 idle are right and also the ball and roller bearings in the case need to turn faster than 800 RPM to live well.
With a SERT you can set the idle to anything you want but mine wouldn't run good under 1040 RPM bacause the cam and springs need the energh there to keep turning good.

So you guys are telling me there is no such thing as a choppy idle with a cam change in an injected bike?

I don't know about you guys butI don't let mine sit around and idle all day. I can't recall it ever sitting and idling for more than maybe 30 seconds without me at least blipping the throttle some. I just don't like the fact that it blows the grass and dust up around me and sounds likea Datsunstuck on high idle after you start it. Even after it warms its still fairly fast for my taste.

I had the dealer set my idle down to 900 rpm on my 02 fuel injected fatboy
... THE ABSOLUTE LOWEST YOU CAN GO and maintain a good charge and oil pressure ...

I'm happy with it .... but a carbed bike set at 850 sounds way lots bunches better
