Having owned a lot of Metrics over the years, I am not familiar with what is normal on these Bikes.

I have an 07 Street Glide and after reading enough threads about engine heat decided to check mine. Took the bike for a ride yesterday, around 65 degrees out. Cruised back into the garage at the end of the run and shut if off. Pulled out my infrared thermometer and put the laser just to the left of the spark plug about at least an inch away. I got 320 degrees on the front and 350 degrees on the rear. Is this within normal specs?

I've never checked the oil temp as I don't have a gauge.

Seems a little hot .Maybe 25 to 30 degrees Maybe your TV2 acting up and getting lean.How hard were u riding it?

 

Not hard at all.

After much research I have come to the conclusion that this is going to be a hard question to answer accurately. The engine sensor that the Tmax feeds off of is located in a different area of the head/cylinder. Just using my infrared thermometer I could see differences in temperatures just by moving around. So unless the same person took the readings from two bikes in identical points, your going to see a difference.

I also have come to realize that the standard measurement for engine temperature is by means of the oil temperature. Which usually runs around 220 ~ 230 degrees. Of course this is taken from the bottom of the motor. As opposed to measuring temps by the spark plug which is probably the hottest part of the motor.

I suspect I'm probably running a little lean. Although other indicators aren't present. The engine runs fine, no pinging or detonation. Exhaust pipes look normal, no excessive bluing. Spark plugs do not look like they have run too hot. I'm sure richening it up some wouldn't be a bad thing.

I still consider the Tmax. Or just picking up a SERT could help me make a few adjustments to richen it up where it needs it.

I think the TVII runs just a Tad too lean.

I probably also need one of the oil dipstick thermometers. Just can't see paying $134.00 for a digital display. Anyone using anything cheaper they would like to recommend?

I'd just ditch the digital thermometer. Ignorance is bliss sometimes - especially if it's running well.

Save your cabbage and get the T-Max.U can pick one up for a little over 6 big heads.Yu and your bike will love it.Quit thinking about it and do it.

 

That is a normal reading for the gun....it reads a lot higher temp than the engine temp sensor. In perspective your engine is running right at 250~255 degrees which is a bit high but normal for a new bike with no mods. I like to see them run in the 230~240 degree area.

 

Thanks Doc, that takes a load off my mind. Can you explain how you arrived at those numbers?

Just curious which fuel mngt system do you endorse with minimal mods like I have (K&N air kit, Rush slip ons w/ 2 inch baffles)?

I didn't read the whole thread so correct me if this has been talked about. When you put the mufflers on, did you get the bike retuned? Do the new ECM closed loop computershave the ability to learn, record and self adjust?

 

If you have a SERT you can look and see which Tuning Cal is present. Whichever it is it will have fuel bias tables. Go to that Cal and change the front and rear Fuel Bias to 798.They will be anything from 450 to 600 to keep 14.6. Download the modified Calyou will then be at 14.1 AFR. Helps the temp problems.
