I would say if you like the 88, so be it. Some will recomend going to 95, I did and I dont regret it.
If you stay as an 88, I would have the head ported, and have the heads CCed to 85 ccs and put a .030 head gasket in. This way if you go to a 95 in the heads have been corrected and you will be able to match the pistons right to get any desired compression ratio right on the money.
(many piston companys base comp on a 88 or 95 in.with a 85 cc head).
It will run alot better. add a Woods TW 6 or HQ 0034 cam and it will realy shine.

RE: heads with stock 88
Mentor gave you some great advice.
The 95 will offer some good gains and is not overly costly. Add a budget head to the build and a mild cam and you should be happy. Since you have S&S 510 in there now a bump in compression would really wake that engine up. The 95 would be a easy way to increase the compression due to increase in bore size. Mill the head some and the cam will turn on much sooner. Either way the head wrok will net you some felt gains.

Given your interest in performance, why not skip the step of doing the heads for an 88 and either do a 95 now with street ported headsor save the cash you'd spend on head work now and do it later along with the 95 jugs and complimentary pistons? The head work cost would be the same, and boring your existing jugs and new pistons would cost about 450-500.
