Default Rocker cover replacement.

I want to change out the rocker covers on my '05 FXSTI for a nice set of shiny chrome ones.

I have done a quick search, but cannot find any threads that have the answers I am looking for.

I have the manual and it mentions using special wrenches due to the clearances around the frame. Is this something that I can expect to achieve myself without the "rocker cover wrench" and "rocker housing wrench", or am I best just to pay my money and have it done by somebody that knows what they are doing?

I am no expert mechanic, but I have tackled routine servicing, lowering the back end and doing a 16" front wheel conversion. I would like to do the job myself, but don't want to regret starting the job, when I can't finish it. I would hate to be one of those people that mechanics complain about for bringing in half done jobs that they have tried to do and failed!

Any tips/advice from anyone who has done this would be appreciated.

I always do it by "feel" on the bolts that need torque wrench adapters. I've never had a problem. Go for it. It is a fairly easy job.

The rocker cover wrench is nice in that it holds a hex in a rachet setup that will fit under the frame. You can do the job without it though, just a bit more tedious without the rachet.

I had the local Tool room order mine in the Proto brand. Was a lot cheaper than the Snap On. They can be done w/o but any time I am screawing into alum. I feel better with correct torque. Those heads are not cheap. Your call. The actual changing out is not bad. Geting all the tank and such off is the worst part. You will need to unload the rocker arms and remove before you can change the lower covers. No problem just a little more thought involved. These engines really are just a big lawnmower!lol If you get in a bind one of uswill have the awnser to help you out. Have enclosed a couple pics of what you are getting into.

Thanks for the replies guys. The pictures are a big help also - I think it is fear of the unknown that worries me more than anything else. I really enjoy the sense of satisfaction I get from doing the work myself, I just don't want to get over confident in my abilities. When I have my car serviced I think if these monkeys can do it, I am sure I can figure it out, but I have no interest in working on a car - weird isn't it!

Hopefully I will be tackling the job between Christmas and New Year - I have promised myself a little time to myself away from the daily grind.
