RE: What carb for a 78 FLH
You say that a 42 didnt work, because of a rich running condition. Did you try smaller jets in the carb? Also, what Cubic Inch motor do you have, and what size carb does a 88ci run. You could use these numbers to figure out carb size. I apologize for not being able to give more info, but in the year of 78, I was a whopping 4yrs old. I wouldnt give up on the carb you have currently, but I would try to rejet, and lower the slide needle.

On my '78 FLH I ran the stock Keihin, then a 38 Bendix, then back to the Keihin. That 42 oughtta work on your bike if set up properly. Seen plenty of 'em on 80 inch Evos and they ain't that much different than your 74 incher, especially with the slightly bumped compression. What jets and needle settings have you tried?

I had an S&S on my 81 Low Rider. It was fine. Ran well with no complaints.
I have been told that the EVOS should use the Mik42.
I think with jetting, the Mik should work for you. Get smaller jets before getting rid of this carb. The speed shops love this carb.
Any carb should be able to be set up.
Also look around on the Mikuni site. At Laughlin last year there was a small booklet on tuning the Mikuni 42. I would think it is on line some where.

Thanks for the info. The jets and needle are as lean as I can get on the Mikuni and it still loads up. the plugs were black after a five mile cruz. The local expert says I need to put high dome pistons to up the compresion but I don't want to tear down a motor with only 1000 miles on it.

Another response from another board:
Yup - that's too much carb for a 74" Shovel.
Even when you get it set for mid to upper range,
it'll still be too rich @ idle. No happy medium.
It'll work on the Sportys because they're a
little faster breathing/revving than the Shovel.
