I was out for a ride on Saturday and on the way home the bike started losing power, popping, and idling very rough. It died a couple times at the stop lights. I noticed at home that the noise the fuel pump makes when getting ready to start the bike is different than it was. I figured I had a hole in the fuel line in the tank. However, I've got the guts out of the tank, and I can see where the line is rubbing, but there doesn't appear to be a hole yet so I don't think the line is the problem. Could a clogged fuel filter cause this, or is this likely a fuel pump and/or pressure regulator problem? The bike is an '03 with 20k miles on it.

 

For anyone who has this problem in the future, the tab holding the regulator housing in is cracked, which causes the regulator to pop up allowing the pressure to escape.

Good catch, thanks for the heads up. It may or may not be a frequent failure but your post could save the next guy lots of trouble shooting time if experiencing the same symptoms.
