Default Pipes And Carb?

I recently bought a 2005 Fatboy from the local Harley dealer, it was traded in by a doctor that had put 259 miles on it in two years. The dealer serviced it and went ahead and did the 1000 mile service since it was 2 years old. All was fine when I got the bike , it now has 1700 miles on it and is developing a cough or buckjump as I ride it. I am thinking that the carb is partially restricted from not being rode much the first few years. I am wanting to put pipes on the bike, either Hooker Rebels or V&H Long Shots staggered so The carb will probably need to be rejetted. would you guys suggest letting the dealer rebuild and rejet the carb after I put the pipes on, or replace the carb with a S&S or other aftermarket carb? Any thoughts on which pipes would look best on my bike. Thanks Warren

I'm no expert, but I think the carb HD uses is pretty good. You can call your dealership to get a rough quote on the phone for the stage 1 work. I did that and thought it was unreasonably high. I then called a local private shop recommended to me by a friend and they were much cheaper. Also, I decided to do the pipes, air cleaner, and jetting all at once b/c they all go together. FWIW, I don't think this work is rocket science and any decent shop should be able to do good work for a fair price. Also, before I called the local shop, I did my homework on the net and at least knew what questions to ask. I'm going with the D&D Fatcats (2 into 1s)...

If you do your home work you can install evrything your self. It's very easy to do. You allready said that you were going to install the exhaust your self. Right???? Then why not just do the A/C kit and just re jet the Stock CV carb. All the info is right here in the forum. Go to , I think it's called the How-to-do it your self page. Read through it it will give you step-by-step directions with pictures, hell it's better then the HD service manual.
