Default I think the manual is wrong on exhaust tightening!

When tighten the exhaust system the manual says:

Tighten flange nuts at front cylinder studs as follows:
a. Install lower nut and tighten finger tight.
b. Install upper nut and tighten to 9-18 in-lbs (1-2 Nm).
c. Tighten lower nut to 100-120 in-lbs (11.3-13.6 Nm).
d. Tighten upper nut to 100-120 in-lbs (11.3-13.6 Nm).

What happens then is the flange is not in line. I can see it with my eyes. It looks wrong, and it looks like its putting more stress on one of the studs.
What I want to do is not folowing the manuel and tighten the two nuts little by little until they both reach the right torque at the same time.

What is right? The manual feel wrong and it looks wrong and off.

Thank you sorry about my english.

I would do it like you are saying going up even. Exhaust flanges should be even up against the new crush gaskets.

My 04 Softail OEM manual says the same with the other hanger system lose at hand tight .

In the case of exhaust, some judgement is best. Especially after market stuff.. I would probably after finishing with the hangers and muffler clamps, check the exhaust flanges.

PS..

Just snug them up evenly and then tighten to spec. Re-tighten after a couple heat cycles.

They had to put something in the book other than “tighten each nut evenly” as that is not specific enough for the highly educated consumer.

Do y'all use Loctite on your exhaust fasteners? What about on the O2 sensors? In the dirt bike world Loctite isn't often necessary and MXJunky's gonna swap out the giant, ugly exhaust on his Street Bob for something that looks and sounds more badass.

I don't use loctite on exhaust studs or nuts.
The heat cycles make them hard enough to remove!
