'21 Touring Cat Location
I'm REALLY confused. My '21 Street Glide is great but far too quiet for my tastes so I want to change the mufflers. I picked up some S&S slip-ons which claim to be 50-state compliant and even include the certificate stating so. It's my understanding that S&S and others making EPA/CARB mufflers are accomplishing this by placing a cat inside of each muffler.
BUT, isn't the cat in the head pipe, just in front of the right muffler, on a '21 touring? Why would I care if the slip-ons have cats if they are behind the factory cat? You don't really need 2 cats per exhaust outlet do you?
I understand there are full systems out there which relocate the cat to the muffler. The SE is probably the most talked about example. That's a no-brainer though; that is a clear relocation of the cat FROM the head pipe TO the muffler.
Dealership also recommended a tune via an SE programmer to make sure everything is working right. I see a lot of debate on whether or not that's strictly necessary but can it HARM anything? I'm not opposed to buying one but if it's going to create a running condition detrimental to the engine then I obviously don't want to open that can of worms.

Got everything sorted. The CEL was due to a loose connection to the throttle body. They corrected it and now everything is fine and well.
I returned the S&S slip-ons and went with Tab Bam Sticks with the Zombie baffle. It wasn't my first choice but there were some availability problems with another set. For those wondering, the Tabs with Zombies are pretty loud on heavy'ish throttle but actually tame down quite a bit when cruising the highway.
