How can you tell the difference?

By which bike it's mounted in. The rubber mount FX and FL models have the 88A. The Softtails have the 88B. The 88B has counter-balancers to quell the vibes a bit since the Softtails solid mount their engines.

The engine case is elongated with a noticable hump to accomadate the balancers/chains.
