Torque cones: Help or hurt performance?
Maybe I'm kicking a dead horse here, but I've got some questions about torque cones. I know these are suppose to increase backpressure, creating more torque from wide open pipes such as drag pipes. I've done some research online, and I've read that these are a waste of money. Any thoughts? Personal experiences?

They are a POS and do nothing but hurt performance. If you need a little back pressure, try the "lolli-pop" baffle, a washer welded onto a bolt, installed in a hole you drill in the underside of the pipe. Better than nothing, but drag pipes are a real problem, have all kinds of dips and spikes in the torque curve.

I am thinking people missed the part about" drag pipes." On drag pipes, the cones will increase the exhaust velocity that was lost, and improve the scavenging at lower rpms that was also lost. (low exhaust velocity and poor scavenging produce a lot of inversion in the lower rpm range and sucks exhaust back into the chamber during the valve overlap period, diluting the A/F mixture on the intake stroke). Drag pipes are only beneficial at high rpm's, the cones will improve your low end on drag pipes but it is still not a very efficient system for normal street use. 2 into 1 and cross over (power port) systems perform well because the exhaust pulse from one cylinder can fill in the gaps of the other cylinder's pulse, keeping the gases flowing, increasing the velocity and improving the scavenging affect which also reduces inversion. Good scavenging helps "pull in" the fresh A/F mixture.

Torque cones do have their practical applications. They're by no means the ultimate exhaust performance mod, however they made my stock TC88" Softail with a baffless SE Pro Pipe scream low end.
Let's just say they have their applications, but are notthe advertised or endorsed cheaper "cure all" they are often mistaken for.
