Does anyone know the thickness of stock 96" head gaskets? I was told I could increase the comp ratio by .5 by going to smaller head gaskets...I'm looking at .030's.
Probably .045"...maybe .040". I don't think you should go there unless you need to though. Replacing the head gasket is nearly as much work as putting in high-comp pistons. I wouldn't do just the head gasket unless you've got to.
If all you are doing is increasing the compression then the little you would gain by .030 gasket will be a waist of time as mtnlvr said. However if you are doing additional work it could be very benefitial and not just for compression increase.
not worth changing to get nothing out of it. you will never tell the difference.but i think a stock gasket is like .050 or.055 , if the engines torn down you can go to a.030gasket.
We use the thinner gaskets to help achieve .035" quench but more often than not have to shave the cylinder bases also to get there. This little trick gives you more turbulance @ burn, they start easier, and it kickes the torque up 3-5 notches.
