Need info to replace starter on my 91 FLSTC

Bike just clicks when you push the start button. Local shop sold me on purchasing a plate for the side of the solenoid so I can just reach down and push it in to start. When I did that and pushed it in for the first time, all the lights went out and smoke pored out of the battery.

Yup, new starter time and I can not find my service manual for nothing.

What I need to know is what I must do to get to the starter to get her out. Also, what I need to do to complete said tasks (ie. If oil tank needs to be removed, what would be the procedure to do that).
