I think jkeeton already clarified the pipes manufacturer recommended the use of the tapered style header gasket.

My experience tells me,I will continue to use and recommend the HD 17048-98 header gasket. It is my first pick, better put, when application finds it suitable. How's that?

BTW, I have found with some aftermarket pipes where either style tapered, or performance gaskets will work.
