Default Cam Cover Removal - Hints??

Well, finally started my 95" / new (gear cam) build. Thought I would have problems with the exhaust and/or intake bolts - but no, those came off okay.

Problem is that I can't get the cam cover off - took all ten bolts off, beat it with a rubber mallet - won't budge. Anyone have any hints on how to get the cam cover off??

Also, is the oil level inside the cam housing? i.e. do I need to drain the oil? Was thinking to break in the new rings/etc. for a bit then change the oil.

Thanks,

If you have all of the bolts out, a sharp whack with a mallet should knock the cover right off. You will only lose about a pint of oil when the cover comes off.

Not even a pint. You might lose 4-5 oz.

There are 2 dowel pins in the cases that aline the cover. If it does not move from tapping with a hammer. You may want to consider lightly tapping a small pry bar/screw driver between the cover and the case. Carefully though they are only aluminum.
The amount of oil is less that a 1/2 a cup

Like everyone else says....just keep on tapping it and it will budge. You may have to use something to pry....but proceed with extra caution though.

Tonight will apply a little heat (from heat gun) to the cover - maybe that will help warm up the gasket material. Thanks for the feedback. Did not know it had alignment pins.

Well, finally came off - although oil pissed over my HD sweatshirt.

Now, have another question: The outside Oil Pump geotor cam off with the cam plate and then fell on the floor. How does the outside geotor go back together?

I think the waffer washer in first, then the separator plate, then the geotor. Now the geotor has dimple alignment marks - how are those aligned? I did not see any reference in the service manual.

Thanks,

YOu really should get a service manual. I have a FLSTCI and mine did the same thing. If you don't get an answer, I'll look in my service manual tomorrow to see the correct order. The marks on the gerator don't really matter - at least I could find no information that indicated they did. I aligned my pump when I put the cam plate back on and I am having no issues. Seems to have good oil pressure and no symptoms of wet sumping.

Sorry, I re-read your message and you indicate you have a service manual. There should be a picture of how the pump goes together. There is a picture in my manual and that's how I know how to put it back together.

Good luck.
