Lubed throttle cables--now excessive play
Group, 2004 Softail Standard Carberated
I seperated the throttle cable housing and lubed throttle cables. Put it back together and find there is "play" in throttle b4 it catches when advancing the throttle. I have adjusted throttle cable according to my 2004 Softail Standard manual---book says open throttle all the way and adjust cable adjuster til the throttle cam just touches throttle cam stop.
I notice that the throttle cable is a little loose on the throttle cam itself when throttle is at rest position.
Any thoughts?

RE: Lubed throttle cables--now excessive play
When I adjusted my throttle cables "by the book" I found that I had a few degrees of play in them as well. I found the best way to do it was to pull off the intake filter, and then do it by sight and feel. Make sure it's all the way closed at open, all the way open at WOT...and then take up the slack with the ide cable. I have half a mind to pull the throttle cable off all together, as I run with the throttle tensioner on anyway.

The slack is all taken care of with the 2 adjusters on the cable under the bars. The important thing to realize is that on full throttle you want just enough slack in the pull cable so that the hand grip hits the stop and NOT the carb/throttlebody or you will break cables like no tomorrow. If you open the throttle grip fully and slack off on the pull cable just enough so that your linkage down below just misses the stop by a hair, you'll be in good shape and will not break cables.
